New Novel:

The Initiate (2023, Anxiety Press)

“Alone, manic and stranded. Lying on this coffin of a bed, in this strange room, in a city 5000 miles from home. I am in Berlin, but it doesn’t seem right to say it. Nor does it seem right that I am single now, no job, no house, no plan, the walls folding in on me, my ears twisting upward. What have I done what have I done what have I done?”

Meet Richard Doran, poet, walking philosopher, lightening rod for disaster. He has exchanged his old life in small-town Florida for life abroad in the city of his dreams. But in his struggles to adapt, the line between dream, nightmare and black comic burlesque is often blurred.

“A smart as hell expat narrator takes readers on an international romp through Europe. Beginning at a poetry reading in a seedy Berlin pub, we follow him on a wild ride that ranges from museums to graveyards and everything in between. Along the way, we are opened up with a sharp knife to the sweet vulnerability of being in love, being in a family, and being human.”

— Cassie Premo Steele, Author of Beaver Girl

Poetry:

Hallucinogenic Dragonfly Intermezzo (2015)

Berlin poems, Florida poems, poems about the working class, the desperate, the crazy, the lovestruck, poems about love and tool rental shops, brothels and European travels. Poems that change the way you think about poetry.

What an excursion, or rather series of excursions reading Hallucinogenic Dragonfly Intermezzo by M.P. Powers. Delving into these poems feels like whirling in meditative dance, you keep catching and then losing and then catching yourself in the language. There is a layered mastery here and yet the writing is refreshingly accessible. I can’t recommend this book enough – it’s truly original – an exhilarating, hypnotic journey – like nothing I’ve ever read before.
